Bridgewater Commons Goes Electric with Volta EV Stations on Earth Day

Central New Jersey’s dominant retail center will install 20 charging stations around the property to help electric vehicle drivers recharge while they shop, dine and play.

BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (April 18, 2024) — Today, Bridgewater Commons commemorates Earth Day this April. The center announces the installation of 20 Level 2 (L2) Volta electric vehicle (EV) charging stations strategically placed throughout the property. With these state-of-the-art charging stations, shoppers can conveniently power up their electric vehicles while indulging in retail therapy.

L2 chargers at Bridgewater Commons can charge EVs via the industry standard “J Plug” or Tesla’s proprietary connection when using a J1772 adapter, offering guests convenient recharging for their cars or SUVs. Four stations are in the Macy’s parking lot, with the rest distributed around the center. Positioned directly in front of building entrances, these charging stations are ready to serve EV drivers.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Volta charging stations for several reasons,” said Tom Kovacic, Marketing and Business Development Director at Bridgewater Commons. “Bridgewater Commons has a long commitment to sustainability, as has Somerset County. These charging stations will provide a tremendous convenience for our visitors, who are increasingly turning to electric vehicles. Now, they’ll be able to shop, dine and be entertained, all while they’re topping up their auto’s charge to get safely to their next destination.”

According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Somerset County boasts the sixth highest number of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in the state as of December 2023. Moreover, as of June 2023, Somerset has the highest percentage of EVs in the state, NJDEP reported.

Volta Charging, LLC, a subsidiary of Shell USA, Inc., owns and operates a large public EV charging network in the U.S. with a network of over 3,500 charge points across the country.

The installation is the latest eco-friendly initiative from Bridgewater Commons, an IREM Certified Sustainable Property. The center boasts more than 2,000 energy-efficient LED lights, rooftop solar panels, and recycling of more than 250 tons of waste annually. Venting, lighting, energy, fire, security systems, and more are carefully monitored for maximum efficiency.
